Taking Steps to Fly 2019 Showcase
McInnis Room, Dalhousie SUB, University Avenue, Halifax, NS
Sunday, March 31 at 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Taking Steps to Fly is a showcase for young choreographers, organized and presented by Dance Nova Scotia and Kinetic Studio. Dance students from across the province are encouraged to create a work in any dance form. The work can be choreographed by one person or by a collective (2 or more). The work can be created as a solo or group performance.
The showcase will round our a day of activity for these choreographers and dancers. They will begin by working with technicians to set lighting and sound for their piece and then have a chance to run it with those elements. In the afternoon, the pieces will be performed for local adjudicators. The adjudicators will be looking at many elements of the pieces and the level of the work. This year there are 10 pieces in the Individual Category created by eight choreographers and 6 pieces in the Collective Creation Category created by twenty-one choreographers who worked in groups of two or more. Pieces can be solo works or for groups in any number of combinations.
The evening showcase will be the final performance of the pieces for the assembled audience. At the end of the performances, the winners in all categories will be announced.
Along with the Taking Steps to Fly winners, we will once again be announcing the winner of Halifax Dance’s Pat Richards Award. In addition, and for the first time, Ross Creeks Centre for the Arts will be joining us to announce the two winners of the Joseph Lappin Choreographic Scholarship.
