Celebrating 30 years of the Halifax Dance Young Company, our 2019 Spring Season show is not to be missed!

On May 10 and 11, Halifax Dance will celebrate an impressive milestone: 30 years of memorable performances by The Young Company. This year’s Spring Season presentation includes sixteen of the most talented pre-professional dancers in the city and features works by several local choreographers and guest artists.

“The Young Company (YOCO) has been providing gifted young artists the opportunity to complement their technical training with valuable creation and performance experience for three decades,” says Gillian Seaward-Boone, co-Director of The Young Company and YOCO alumni herself. “The company offers dancers the incredible chance to perform in works created with and for them by some of the very best choreographers in the country. These opportunities are usually reserved for professional dancers, but YOCO continues to bridge the gap between our local youth and the professional milieu.”
YOCO’s impressive legacy spans generations. Two performers in this year’s show are the children of former YOCO dancers. Rachael Grant, the company’s current Costume Designer, was an original member of the Young Company when it debuted in 1989. Her daughter, Anais Grant-Church, is now a full company member and is featured on the poster for this year’s show. “My mom experienced the same joy of dancing that I feel every day,” says Anais Grant-Church, a student of Halifax Dance’s Intensive Training Program. “I am proud to be a part of a company with that kind of longevity.”
YOCO’s 30th anniversary season coincides with Halifax Dance’s own celebration: 45 wonderful years of bringing the joy of movement to dance lovers in our community, regardless of age or ability.
