TAKING STEPS TO FLY 2018
McInnes Room, Dalhousie Student's Union Building
Sunday, March 25 at 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Taking Steps to Fly (TSF) has become one of the highlights of the year at Dance NS and anticipated with excitement by young dancers across the province who are ready to explore the art of making dances. This competition which is organized and presented by Dance Nova Scotia and Kinetic Studio is meant to encourage dance students to create a work of their own in any dance form. The work can be choreographed by one person or by a collective and can be a solo or group performance. The competition ends with a final showcase performance where the audience gets a chance to see all of the works, as well as the announcing of winners in all categories, including the overall Taking Steps to Fly 2018 winner. This 2018 final showcase will feature the largest number of choreographic pieces ever in the many years of the competition, with 16 pieces created by 14 individual choreographers and an incredible 10 pieces created collectively by 32 choreographers working in groups of 2 to 10.
The showcase will also announce the winner of the Pat Richards' Award presented annually by Halifax Dance in honour of dancer, choreographer, educator and mentor Pat Richards.
TSF began as part of Dance Nova Scotia’s Open Studio Series and in 2005 became a joint project of Dance NS and Kinetic Studio. There have always been opportunities for young dancers to perform but rarely is there encouragement for them to explore the art of creating dances. TSF allows them to emerge from their role as interpretive artists and begin to develop their own choreographic voices. Taking Steps to Fly is a showcase for young choreographers, organized and presented by Dance Nova Scotia and kinetic Studio. Dance students are encouraged to create a work in any dance form. The work can be choreographed by one person or by a collective and can be a solo or group performance.
Please join us for this year’s showcase which w will once again be taking place at the McInnis Room in the Dal SUB on March 25th, 2018 at 7:00 pm.
